Well, we have all been there at some time. The problem is frustrating, but the answer seems deceivingly simple.

This time it is Siebel client. It does not really matter whether it is local database, or sample. But I was using High Interactivity client at that time.

You double click on the Siebel icon to start the client. The database gets started up just fine. Siebel icon is displayed in the system tray briefly, and then nothing happens.

Internet Explorer window shows a very helpful “Page cannot be displayed” message.

And, siebel.exe is not found to be running in the background.

Siebel Tools runs just fine with the same DBF (and the SRF, if it is sample database). When you start debugging with Siebel log, you will see absolutely no errors in the entire log. This is puzzling for sure.

The Siebel log in my case simply had the following statements at the end..

From the log it looks like Siebel is ending itself after a successful session. No Siebel crash, no errors in Siebel log. Looking back this was what made this a frustrating experience.

The solution to this problem was surprisingly simple.

Just run Siebel as an administrator of the computer.

It turns out that Siebel client is trying to override an existing ActiveX control, and could not do it. Instead of gracefully failing that error, Siebel decided to just log out of the problem.

This is required only the first time Siebel is installed afresh, or a new patch is installed. Administrator privileges are not required after that successful first run.
